Diet and Sleep

The food you eat not only contributes to the quality of your weight and general health, but also on how well you sleep. Some foods help you sleep better. While others can make sleep difficult or even impossible.

Foods that improve sleep include fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, and mushrooms. Even spices such as dill, sage and basil help with sleep problems.

Drinking milk before bedtime, a common method to aid sleep, is actually effective. Milk actually contains tryptophan, which can be converted to serotonin, the hormone that controls sleep. Honey, turkey, egg whites and tuna also contain tryptophan, which are good night time snacks.

Alternatively, caffeine-rich food and beverages should be avoided right before going to bed. This includes coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, soft drinks and some medications. Some foods that are rich in tyramine can also affect sleep. Tyramine actually causes the release of a substance that stimulates the brain keeping you awake. This is found in bacon, cheese, sugar, ham or tomatoes.

Spicy foods, on the other hand, may cause gastrointestinal reflux or heartburn. While sweet or greasy foods can also cause indigestion and bloating. And though alcohol can make you sleepy, it actually upsets sleep patterns later in the night resulting to frequent waking in the night to urinate.

Even how much and when you eat affect sleep patterns. It is best to keep the last meal of the day light. Eating too much or heavy meals before sleeping may cause indigestion, heartburn and discomfort. It is recommended to start with a hearty breakfast, the main meal of the day around noon, and a light supper early in the evening.

You may also take vitamins and supplements to aid sleep. Calcium and magnesium helps induce sleep. Calcium-rich foods include milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, sardines, salmon, broccoli, tofu, egg, and calcium-fortified food. Magnesium is found in nuts, almonds, cashews, beans, and spinach. Vitamins B6 and B12 are often beneficial and used in the treatment of insomnia. Some of the foods that contain Vitamin B6 are liver, meat, brown rice, fish, butter, wheat germ, whole grain cereals, and soybeans. Foods rich in Vitamin B12 include some plant milks, some soy products and some breakfast cereals.

Annette's Favorite Phrase ...

Annette’s Favorite Phrase, “Because I Can” I just thought the picture was cute!

You know, things are certainly not what they seem you know? We all have struggles, we’ve built patterns of thinking that have become so imbedded, we operate as if those thoughts aren’t even there, kind of like on auto-pilot, flying around in the subconscious, and that’s when things become mediocre. What does mediocre look like? Here:

• “This is my life, there’s nothing more.”

• “Ho-hum, I’ll beat the grind day-in and day-out.”

• “Tryin, scrapin, hopin’ to make a buck.”

• “LIFE IS HARD because that’s what I’ve been taught, that’s what I’ve witnessed, so it must be.”

This is how many people think- – and I know this simply because this is what I’m told by them. And I can relate because I subconsciously do the same. Here’s what I used to think…

“I am not worth it.”

Oh, you don’t believe me? Hahahahaha! I know. I realize what the perception of me is, “Annette the forever drill sergeant, the tell-it-like-it-is, there’s nothing she can’t do miss she eats perfectly (crock-of-$hit by the way), operates on all cylinders 24 hours a day, relentless on everybody and getting the best out of them, while standing tall, proud, and so sure of herself.”

I put on a pretty good show-eh? The reality is, we all have the same thoughts, but knowing how to see, hear and change them is what defines us. Here’s the key to seeing and hearing: repeat and re-do. You’d be amazed at what you’re saying but aren’t aware.

Personal example of myself:

Beginning 22 years ago I would unknowingly say this in my head-

• I don’t believe I can “make it” in the college universities

• I can’t even pass an SAT test. By the way….what the hell is an SAT?

• Sounds like something too “big” for me to be able to pass

• Ahh, forget it; I’m working at 15, screw all these academics!

And then….

• OMG I feel so left behind

• I feel so umm, stupid

• I’m not smart

• What will other people think when they find out I don’t even have an associates degree….and I’m 32 years old?!?!

• Ahhh, forget it; I’m working, and pretty good at it!

But all these things equaled one thing: “I am not worth it to even try.”

And now….

• (Breath of relief) I have one more semester at the junior college and I’ll have my associates of science degree- -YAY! I’m 41 yrs old now, it only took 20 years to get it!

• I don’t feed into the “looking down their nose in disdain” reaction to when I share with people my “extensive“ and glorious academic record, nor do I feel like an a$$ when they immediately ask me, “Oh what 4-year are you going to? What are you going to be when you get your bachelor’s degree? Don’t you want to get your degree just to have it?” I smile and simply say, “I’m going to do what I’m doing now, be free from punching anybody’s time clock, I like my freedom to work when I want to, and if I ever get a calling to go get a bachelors degree, I will.”

• I am worth it to finish what I started so long ago.

• I don’t have to measure up to anybody but me.

• I can look in the mirror and be proud of myself

What changed all this? I’d sit in the quiet like when driving, before I fell asleep, even while in the middle of teaching a heavy interval during a class—I finally listened to my thoughts you know? I heard them, repeated them out loud just to make it “real,” and then I “un-did” the negative pattern with new words. And this resulted in the birth of my favorite phrase, “Because I can!”

Dear Diary

May 27, 2009

Dear Diary,

I weighed myself this morning after breakfast and I was at 161lbs.  So happy.  Work it paying off!  It was cold and rainy so I didn’t bike.  I almost slept in.  I ran out of oatmeal so just had scrambled eggs, berries and coffee.  I had my veggies for snacks and roast beef for lunch.  A coworker brought in cookies and made me take one at like 8am!  I had a few bites but decided it wasn’t good and threw it out.  NOT like my usual self.  I had my protein shake when I got home and will have an omelette with peppers and onions, and asparagus for dinner.

I did take the stairs 7 times today.  They are wearing me out but in a good way.  Ass and calved hurt by the 6th and 7th time up the stairs but it’s the good burn.  Also my calves are looking pretty good.  The calf raises with heavy weight and high reps have helped.  They are “endurance” muscles and require lots of training.  I did go do the gym and routine is below.

All in all, a good day!

Weight Loss Drugs

Obesity is fast becoming the number one health problem in developed and developing countries around the world; this problem is now affecting a large number of children of school entry age. For some, the decision is simple and they just write out a check for the surgery but others prefer the harder approach of actually getting fit and controlling their diet. Another group prefers the use of weight loss drugs to aid them in losing weight so that results can be seen more quickly.

The idea behind the drugs is to quicken each person’s metabolism enabling the weight to be lost much quicker. These drugs were quickly removed from circulation when tests revealed that one of the more dangerous side effects was an increased risk of heart valve disease. Not to be defeated though, manufacturers have introduced updated drugs, prescribed by doctors but the FDA approval process is slow.

The drugs work by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain, making it believe that the stomach is already full, thereby, increasing the person’s metabolic rate. It was only after scientists discovered that these drugs had side effects and were related to heart valve disease that they were taken off the shelves. Not to be defeated though, manufacturers have introduced updated drugs, prescribed by doctors but the FDA approval process is slow.

Practitioners may recommend weight loss drugs to different classes of people including:

1.    Patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more,

2.    Overweight patients with a BMI of 27 or more who either lack “good” HDL cholesterol, have too much “bad” LDL cholesterol, are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, have a high blood pressure, or have sleep apnea

3.    People who have tried other weight loss methods, and failed

Types of Prescription Weight Loss Drugs:

- Most available weight-loss medications are “appetite suppressants” medications. These medications generally come in the form of tablets or extended-release capsules (pills that release medication over a long period of time).

- Another type of prescription weight loss drug is a fat absorption inhibitor. Xenical is the only example of this type of treatment approved for use in the U.S. Xenical works by blocking about 30% of dietary fat from being absorbed. Xenical is now sold over-the-counter as Alli

The Side Effects of Prescription Weight Loss Drugs:

Most appetite suppressants are used as a short-term treatment for people with obesity. Not only do the drugs’ effects tend to wear off after a few weeks, but they can also have some unpleasant side effects, including:

•    Increased heart rate

•    Increased blood pressure

•    Sweating

•    Constipation

•    Insomnia (inability to sleep or stay asleep)

•    Excessive thirst

•    Lightheadedness

•    Drowsiness

•    Stuffy nose

•    Headache

•    Anxiety

•    Dry mouth

These drugs are by prescription only for very good reasons. For instance, if your body is blocking fat absorption, it is probably also blocking the absorption of a variety of different vitamins and minerals that are critical to the proper functioning of your body. If you use prescription weight loss pills in ways your doctor did not advise — overdosing, for instance — you may become sick because you aren’t getting proper nutrition, and this can even cause you to put on more weight.

Weight loss supplements can be effective in conjunction with regular exercise and a healthy diet. It’s just a matter of finding what works for your particular needs. Talk to your physician about conventional and alternative options for losing weight.

Are you Addicted to Carbs?

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend!  I was invited to a lovely little bar-b-q in Malibu, up by Pepperdine and Zuma Beach.  Everyone has to bring a little something to eat, but the main food was being catered.  I brought the Cherry Tomato and Watermelon Salad from my book.  If you read my blogs, you saw the recipe for this last week.

So, I’m sitting with some friends and the conversation turns to eating healthy.  Unfortunately, when you’re a personal trainer, it tends to come up.  I don’t mind, though.  It’s what I do and I love it…well that and cooking.

Anyway, I’m telling them about the basis of the way I eat and how I ask my clients to eat which is no starchy carbs after breakfast, if possible.  That gives you your glycogen stores for the day and they’ll be used up by the time you go to bed.  Meanwhile,  the food for the rest of the day consists of mainly proteins and vegetables.   I have to modify this for Vegans, but it seems to work pretty well for everyone.

The woman sitting next to me says,”Oh, I could never do that.  I HAVE to have carbs.”  I explained that she IS having them, just earlier in the day.  She insisted she couldn’t go without them.

“I’m addicted.” she said.  “I’ll go nuts if I don’t have them at each meal.”

I tried to tell her that most starchy carbs, like potatoes, pasta and rice, change to glucose in your body, so she’s really addicted to sugar.  “That, too!”  she yelped.

Oy.  Some people don’t want to hear what they need to change.  They revel in their extra few pounds and can’t get into any kind of a health plan, whether it’s working out or changing their diet.  It’s a catch 22…once you start to eat better, you’ll feel better and not “NEED” those starchy carbs.  It takes 21 days to change your body’s cravings.  That’s it…Give me 3 weeks and I’ll change the way your body ingests, digests and responds.

Try my way for 21 days.  Email me and I’ll whip out a meal plan for you.  I bet you’ll see a difference!

Talk to you later,

Rona

The Eat Clean Diet - Oxygen Magazine Recommended

I finally bought my own copy of The Eat Clean Diet yesterday and read it by the time I got half way home from my bf’s parents house on the train last night.  It was a good read and it’s not a daunting method of eating.  I did stumble across some things that amazed me which I will research and write about later on.  I suggest all of Tosca Reno’s books because they are what got me as far along as I have come.  Buy them here: http://www.amazon.ca/Eat-Clean-Diet-Fat-Loss-lasts-Forever/dp/1552100383

3 Steps to Burn the Fat, Lose Weight and Gain That Killer Body

Losing weight is something that many people are trying to do and whether they are sweating in the gym running circles around the park or eating that last celery stick for the day, they are involved in many methods that they think are helping them to burn the fat. However, what most people must know is that they have been doing the wrong thing for a long time and it is just because of that they are still fat and have not lost much weight, or everything they have lost, they have put back on.

We will disucss three of the greatest mistakes that people always make and set them right for the combination for effective weight loss and insane metabolism. The first thing that most people think to do when trying to lose weight is to actually eat less, and some of them try the crash diet, which means starving themselves and the body.

This is actually the worst thing to do because not only do they slow down the metabolism by doing this; they also prepare the body to just gain back the weight in a few months. Indeed, dieting the incorrectly will only make yourself more and more sluggish and cause your body to start transforming everything into fat. What you need to be doing is to increase the amount of meals that you are eating daily, meals that contain good protein, good healthy carbs, fibres and vitamins.

These meals should be equal in size, about half of a standard meal, and eaten about 5 6 times a day. By doing this, you will be able to fully exploit your body’s potential to burn fat and hence increase your metabolism rate. Another misconceived myth is running everyday. People go through their running routine daily and expect themselves to lose weight. This is wrong. Running is bad on the knees and after a while your body will get used to this, and the fat will stop burning. You need to have more variety in your exercise and include a muscle building exercise routine. Lean muscles help to burn fat, because the muscle consumes fat and calories in order to work. The more lean muscle you have, the more fat you burn.

Toss up your cardio routine and you will find yourself breaking through the plateaus and making large gains. The last mistake that people are making is they are not consuming enough vitamins and minerals, especially protein to form muscle and lose fat. According to the greats out there, you should burn the fat and feed the muscle! This means a quality nutrition programme that is more than 70% of your whole weight loss programme. With these three tips in mind, you will be able to get rid of that belly fat, burn pounds, raise your metabolism and look great! These tips will help you lose weight quickly and transform your body into what you want.

Cheating While On Medifast?

Yes, it’s been a loong while since I’ve posted. So many things have happened. Things I had never thought I’d let happen.  One of the biggest events of this past 2 months..

I had an OFF Medifast Meal.

Yup, I cheated. No more 100% OP track record for me.

Insert horror music here! <—–(dun dun duuuuun!)

(I also posted most of the following on the MF Purple team board, so if it seems redundant, that’s why)

This week had to be one of the hardest that I’ve ever had, but it ended on a good note. I decided to plan an “off” MF meal for a special occasion, and afterwards remembered how much I hated feeling “full”. It was a sad reminder of past eating habits and that I didn’t want to go back to that way of life…ever. Lesson learned, don’t go off program.. ever. lol. I seriously felt like I was going to vomit for about an hour and a half after the meal. Too many carbs, too much fat… altogether, too much food. bleh.

I really have absolutely no regrets though… it taught me a lesson that I apparently needed to be re-taught, and it made me realize even more why I am using Medifast to shed these yucky pounds. I am now back on track with a vengeance!

After that debacle, I realized that I have been so busy, I forgot to re-order my MF meals. I found myself with only a few days left… and we’re heading into a Holiday weekend, which means it’ll take forever to get here from MD. I became so sad.. thinking I was going to have to go off program for a day or two. All of the sudden a friend of a friend calls me out of the blue and tells me that she just finished MF and she had tons of stuff left over. She is going to ship it, but it will be here MUCH faster than it would coming from back East. Woohoo!

To make up for my off plan meal, I was ridden with guilt… so this morning I decided to go back to my athletic roots. I woke up and went for a 4 mile jog in the scorching southern California heat. I just got back a while ago, and I feel great. I must’ve been gone running for at least an hour and a half.  That should work off those pesky extra calories I consumed. I pushed myself pretty hard, but I kind of like feeling sore… call me crazy? Yeah, probably.

I’m no longer discouraged, and am happy, motivated, and ready to be healthy and thin again. I think I may do these runs twice a week, and see how that affects my losses. I know some people like walking, but I just can’t do it… I find it way too boring, even with my ipod. One of the main reasons I want to lose this weight is to compete in running again. I guess that athlete in me never really went away. (I injured myself running in 2005, and that is where most of this extra weight came from, because I had to stop running for a year, and then after that, I couldn’t run nearly as hard, or as long).

So how will my indecretion affect my losses this week? I have no idea! I didn’t have that sweet taste in my mouth for the past few weeks, and right after that “bad” meal, it came right back! I’m wondering if it somehow knocked my body into a stronger ketosis? Is that even possible? I drank a TON of water the following days, and felt like I was doing pretty good after the initial sick feeling after the meal. PMS has hit me hard this week, and if there’s one thing that will affect my losses, it could be PMS. TOM is due tomorrow (also happens to be my weigh-in day), so we’ll see how that all works out.

In all honesty, I’m expecting a gain of a pound or two… especially with my hard workout today, TOM, and all of the other things that could contribute. I’m not worried too much.. like I said..

I have NO regrets!

We live and we learn.. and I refuse to beat myself up over this. I will simply pick up the pieces and keep on going strong to my goal!

Quick Fitness Tips

Fat loss more important than weight loss: The craze for losing weight has often misled people to wrong kind of diet. Simply eating less and incorrect restraint on the intake of particular ingredients have often baleful effects on health, leave alone fitness itself. So be aware.

A health fitness tip that most people will certainly look past when starting out is being prepared. You should first research whatever it is that you want to do. That way you know mostly everything that the physical activity will involve. For instance, if you want to start walking one mile a day, you will need to make sure and have a proper pair of shoes to support your new journey. Also, proper clothing and terrain will affect you in your travels.

So here they are, the best 7 Quick Weight Loss Tips.

1. Bring Breakfast Back

When you start bringing back breakfast into you daily meals, than this will benefit you metabolism, because your body then will start with digesting in the beginning of the day.

2. Drink A Lot Of Water

The human body consists of 80% of water. Water detoxes your body and let’s you get rid of all these body toxins. Water also boosts your metabolism and so let you burn fat faster.

3. Stop Eating Junk Food

Junk food is not only full of fats, but they contain the wrong fat, like trans-fat. These fats are saturated fats, this means that these fats are not broken down. Trans fats also have a nasty side effect, because it increases one’s risk of coronary heart disease.

4. Lay Off Sweets

Sweets are largely made of sugar and your body burns only a part of this sugar, the other part is transformed to fat.

5. Exercise

Exercise is not only a proven method to burn fat fast, but is also very healthy. As you do your exercises you will boost your metabolism. Your heart will beat faster so your blood will travel faster through your veins, this is the fastest way for burning all these excess calories.

6. Eat More Often But Spread Your Meals

The normal routine of eating three meals a day is an old concept. If you want to lose weight quickly, you can better eat 5 smaller meals a day. This means eating about every three hours. The benefit of this is, that your body is better able of digesting smaller amounts of food than three times a day a larger portion.

7. Take Action Start Now!

Why people are still gaining weight, is not because they don’t know these quick weight loss tips, but because they don’t take action. Well we got just the thing for you. People are people, but as you all know, not everyone is the same. Some people just want to lose weight to fit their wedding dress. Some people want to lose weight after their pregnancy. Some people want to lose weight because of health issues, like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and so on. This is why you need an individual quick weight loss plan.

Does Green Tea Really Help Weight Loss?

Yes! Green tea really does aid in weight loss as well as other wonderful benefits.

According to a research study from The University of Chicago, Green Tea reduces the levels of blood of glucose (sugars), lipids (fats), and cholesterol.

Studies also showed and proved fat loss on top of the abdominal muscles.

I am a personal advocate for green tea. I really believe in it. However, if you’re thinking about getting Arizona green tea, green tea ice cream, or the Starbucks green tea smoothie, think again.

Those beverages are loaded with sugar and that has adverse affects on the benefits of green tea. Not to mention, they’re filled with tons of calories.

A simple cup of Bigelow’s green tea twice a day will help reduce cravings for sugar-filled foods as well as reduce the appearance of bloat.

Fitness Equipments

Health is Wealth. The saying indicates the essence of a happy and comfortable life. A habit of regular exercise not only makes us look fit and smart but also productive in the work front. Proper exercising is a way to enjoy a disease-free life as well. Unfortunately, many people just don’t know how and where to start. Getting the perfect body shape can only be accomplished by buying the right exercise equipment. The selection of the equipment should be done carefully keeping your comfort and requirements in mind.

There are a hundred lots of home fitness equipment nowadays that are sold in the market. Home fitness equipments vary and you should always have one good reason to buy it. Don’t believe on everything commercials tell you about the equipment. Try to ask yourself first of these questions before you grab your wallet and buy that equipment.

Tips for Fitness Equipments:

1.    Buying fitness equipments should be bought with consideration. Do not buy by impulse. Always ask the opinion of a professional gym instructor before you buy something.

2.    One of the best ways to start an exercise routine is to choose exercise equipment that you love to work upon. Exercise machines are used widely in gyms or fitness clubs. These machines can do wonders for the body if used properly under a trained instructor.

3.    Create a good workout program yourself or look on the internet. The best place to start though is to get an experienced Fitness Specialist or qualified Personal Trainer to write your program and take your measurements. I’m sure you agree that guaranteed success is superior to guessing your program.

4.    Ask about the projected longevity of your potential purchase and take into consideration its mechanical capacities and structural integrity. In order for exercise equipment to be completely effective, it has to be safe, sturdy and durable. You want the fitness equipment to base its workout off of you, rather that the opposite, you having to build your workout around the machinery.

5.    Make sure the Home Fitness Equipment or the Cardio Fitness Equipment is right for you. Ask one of our knowledgeable fitness trainers to help find what gear will suit you best. This will be determined by your height, weight, stride length, age and the amount of daily usage.

6.    If you do not purchase quality home gym equipment, then instead of having a treadmill or other cardio piece that is going to last for ten plus years, you will have an expensive cost hanger!

Essentials for a Basic Home Gym Setup:

1) Training Mat – Make sure that it is thick enough for a concrete surface

2) Sets of dumbbells – Many exercises such as Shoulder press, Upright rows & Squats coated are best as they don’t scratch or rust as easily

3) Fitball / Swissball – Core strengthening, balance, abs, & legs – Make sure that the maximum weight tolerance is at least 110kg

4) Resistance tubing/strips – Upper body exercises, assisted chin-ups, rehabilitation – Tubing is better if it has handles

5) Weighted Medicine Ball – 3kg, 4kg or 5kg – Abs exercises, power throws, pushups, weighting your squats – You only need one or two

6) Weight Bench – Great for many dumbbell & body weight exercises – Very useful if you also have dumbbells

7) Stairs, strong wooden box or strong chair – Dips, step ups, step downs, power jumps – You will already have it at home – Make sure it’s sturdy!

Big Mirror – For watching your technique – Depends on whether you get it new or 2nd hand – The bigger the better!

Safe and Simple Weight Loss. Famine Food.

For many of us, being overweight is not just a physical condition. It is an emotional condition as well.

When you are uncomfortable with your weight, you feel worse about yourself. In fact in a recent study.40,000 people concluded that overweight people are much more likely to suffer from major depression.

It is not hard to figure out why. Television and magazines are full of impossibly thin people, and we are made to feel like we can never match up.

To help you overcome these problems, I have found a NATURAL appetite suppressant, which is an advanced, caffeine free formula, which will help you lose weight as part of your diet and exercise programme.

Its safety has been reviewed by three toxicology studies being carried out and it has achieved a GRA (Generally Recognised as Safe) status.

The popularity of this product is steadily increasing thanks to many of the high profile celebs in the U.S and Europe, who using it to jump start their weight loss plan.

Caralluma Fimbriata is the name of this succulent plant found in the wild, in various parts of India

It has been used as an appetite suppressant in India for centuries, as a portable food for hunters, and is listed by ‘Wealth of India’, the Indian Health Ministry, as ‘famine food’, used in periods of famine to suppress appetite.

It is a NEW ARRIVAL in the family of cacti and succulent plants that are becoming increasing popular for their appetite suppressant, and weight loss properties, as well as their ability to lower blood sugar and enhance endurance.

The product I have found is called CARRALLUMABURN.

If you would like to find out more or if you are interested in reducing your weight, and at the same time improving your emotional condition, and in a manner that will enhance your endurance then go to http://www.safeandsimpleweightloss.com. where you can get a RISK FREE TRIAL.

There’s a large amount of bad advice being given out by unscrupulous folks, so should you want to appreciate ways to shed pounds quickly, this article will show you the correct way. How to lose pounds Quickly Tip one If you’re serious about making an attempt to lose pounds, one of the 1st steps you may take is to work out your intake of calories. Don’t pay any attention to averages, as all folks are dissimilar.

Just work out your own average intake over a period of many days. When you have a fair sample of days, you can then work out how much you can cut from this every day to try and scale back your consumption. If you can chop off, say, five hundred calories, you’ll be going a good way towards realizing your dream weight. The way to shed pounds Quickly Tip 2 No starvation diets there’s a miles better way. If you eat smaller meals in the day, you may end up less hungry, you’ll need to eat less to get the same nutrient, and you can lose pounds. How to shed pounds Quickly Tip three Don’t eat more than you need to.

One engaging, and highly crucial fact, is that it takes around 20 mins before the stomach gives the signal to the brain that it has taken in enough food. So, you can simply be easting superfluous food for 20 mins. This is made far less imperative if you eat less more often. The equation is straightforward enough. If you are taking regular exercise, the surplus blubber will be burnt off. You can, in effect, educate your body to become used to burning fat rather than storing it.

Once this happens, weight reduction becomes automated, as long as you maintain your exercise program. There’s no puzzle to it, truly, so push the links below to find out more resources. For more information, visit lipobind review, appesat review, proactol, alli diet pills.

The Devil Tells Oprah to Lose 20 lbs!

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and basis for the Meryl Streep hit role of The Devil Wears Prada, had quite the request for daytime talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

Wintour had told the talk show host to drop 20 pounds to be on the cover of the fashion magazine back in 1998!

“It was a very gentle suggestion,” she said, laughing. “I went to Chicago to visit Oprah, and I suggested that it might be an idea that she lose a little bit of weight.”

She added: “I said simply that you might feel more comfortable. She was a trooper!”

Winfrey must have listened to the fashion legend. She was featured on the cover from more than 10 years ago with the tagline: “Oprah! A Major Movie, An Amazing Makeover.”

“She totally welcomed the idea, and she went on a very stringent diet,” Wintour said. “And it was one of our most successful covers ever.”

Lack of sleep means you may become obese

Sleep, do you just love the thought of it? I do, I love my bed!

A US study has recently shown that those who sleep the longest are slimmer than those who “short sleep”.  Obesity fact.  There was also some research done previously that said you are 75% more likely to be obese if you have had less than 7-9 hours sleep.  Wow!

You need more sleep

The reason why they say that lack of sleep may be one cause for obesity is that hormone levels are affected when you get less sleep, it’s disrupting the normal hormone balance.  By this I mean that the satiety hormone, the one that makes you hungry, called leptin, is reduced.   Therefore you obviously feel more hungry, and in consequence put on more weight.

There are obesity facts and articles written all the time because it is now such a huge problem and it’s time we really started doing something serious about it.   Make sure you are getting at least 7-9 hours sleep.  It will make you feel better too.

Discover more obesity facts here.  Don’t forget, summer is just around the corner!  Start now.

The Importance of Dieting and Weight Loss

Did you know that healthy people live longer? This fact doesn’t seem to sink into most people’s brains too well because there are still billions of people on this planet who are obese and generally overweight. How would you like to live a very long, healthy life? Some people think that once they reach a certain age, that there is no point in living anymore. Did you also know that there are some much older people that are actually much more healthy than younger folks? If you take a 20-year-old who is very overweight and compare them to a 60-year-old who is in tip-top shape, chances are that the 60-year-old will come out feeling and looking a lot better than the 20-year-old. Weight charts are very popular amongst those who stay in shape due to the fact that they keep the idea of health and not gaining too much weight fresh on their minds.

There are so many reasons to want to want to get into shape. Dieting will not only help you to lose weight, but it will lift your mood as well. If we really thought about what certain foods were doing to our bodies, then we would be much more cautious before eating them. An example of this might be how unhealthy that a hot dog is. What is it’s nutritional value? It really doesn’t have much of one at all. The great thing about eating healthy is that healthier foods can provide much more satiation than the unhealthy variety. For example, most foods that are considered to be highly nutritional and very healthy have a higher fiber amount. Fiber is what gives us that full feeling and keeps us from overeating. Some foods have no fiber and just go straight through us, like white bread. Those types of foods actually cause us to eat more because they spike our sugar levels up entirely too high, and then they drop down very low again. That is what causes us to stay hungry.

The importance of dieting and weight loss cannot be stressed enough. Weight charts are a great tool when on a diet because they inform you on your progress, if you are close to your goal, how much is too much, and how much is too little for you to weigh. Weight loss can take the stress off of your internal organs. You will find that you can breathe better and think much clearer when you lose the weight that you need to rid yourself of. Exercising can also be a time of rejuvenation for your entire body.

There is a much better life that you could be living. You do not have to remain depressed, sad, and overweight. Your life could mean so much more, and it should. Your health is important to the time that you spend here on this planet. Weight charts will help you to define what is right for you and what is not, they can also give you motivation. Once you have your weight problems out of the way, that will be one less thing that you have to worry about, and one less thing that brings you down.

Top 5 Fat Loss Tips

Men’s Fitness magazine recently asked me for 3 of my best fat loss secrets. Since most times the magazines just don’t have enough space to run my full tips, I thought I’d give you a more detailed explanation of my secrets here (plus a few extra bonus tips that I didn’t send to the magazine).

Secret #1 – Focus on burning carbohydrate, not fat, during your

fat-loss workouts.

Sounds backwards, right? But not when you look at how I structure my workouts. Remember that Turbulence Training focuses on resistance training and interval training. Both of these use carbohydrate as the main source of energy. So it’s obvious the workout is designed to burn carbohydrates during the training session.

I have no interest in you trying to train in your “target heart

rate zone” for fat burning (aka – the fat burning zone). The whole idea of a fat-burning zone is an over-simplified idea of how the body works during exercise.

Leave the inefficient fat burning zone to the mis-educated

trainers in the commercial gyms (that not surprisingly, also want to sell you a heart rate monitor so you can stay in your “fat

burning heart rate zone”).

If you want to get the most results in the least amount of time,

focus on burning carbohydrates, not fat.

Why do my fat loss workouts focus on burning carbohydrate rather than fat? In order to burn more calories after the workout, that’s why. When you exercise with intervals and heavy resistance training, your body uses more calories in the hours after exercise than it would if you did traditional cardio and lifted lighter weights.

Alwyn Cosgrove calls this ‘afterburn’, and I call it ‘Turbulence’.

By any name it gives you the same results – maximum

improvements in your body composition (helping you lose fat while gaining muscle).

Secret #2 – Use a range of repetitions in your strength training

workouts.

In order to train more muscle fibers and burn more carbohydrates, I have clients use a range of repetitions within the same workout. My workouts now use 6, 8, and 12 reps per set in order to work the muscle the most effectively.

This will burn more carbohydrates and promote as much muscle growth as possible when you are keeping the calories low.

Secret #3 – Use the stationary cycle for interval training.

I choose the stationary bike for intervals whenever possible

because cycling against a resistance can help maintain muscle mass.

Cycling against a resistance also allows you to perform a large

amount of mechanical work, and that is a key determinant of the Turbulence in my training.

But please note: I don’t use low-intensity, fast pedaling

’spinning’ intervals as I’m convinced that the hard, resistance

based intervals are more effective for fat loss. My clients only

cycle against a strong resistance in their intervals.

I really like the bike, but there are many other ways to do

intervals. Use what works for you, but if you are at a plateau, try the bike.

Secret #4 – Increase meal frequency

Okay, so this isn’t really a secret to anyone that has read about

fat loss. But a 2005 study from the American Journal of Clinical

Nutrition showed that eating 6 times per day was associated with eating fewer calories per day, lowering cholesterol levels, and lowering post-meal insulin levels.

Combine an increased meal frequency with an increased protein and fiber intake, and you’ll see your body composition improve rapidly.

If you need more nutrition help, then you’ll love the new

See below for more details…

Secret #5 – My Synergistic Turbulence Training Workouts

My Turbulence Training Fat Loss workouts are fast becoming the most effective way to burn fat, build muscle, and get lean. The synergistic strength training-interval training workouts are

efficient and effective – getting you in and out of the gym in

under an hour.

Here are some tips that you can use for an advanced training phase

- use these tips for 2 weeks then return to your normal training

schedule:

a) Add 10 seconds to each interval but maintain the intensity

b) Add in some bodyweight circuits (10-20 minutes per day) done in the morning or evening (if you do your regular workout in the AM, do your bodyweight circuits after dinner; otherwise, do the bw circuits first thing in the AM, and then do your regular workout at lunch or later in the afternoon or evening)

If you are advanced, you can use squats, pushups, and bodyweight rows for your circuit.

If you are a beginner, you could use lying hip extensions, modified pushups, and stick-ups.

c) Add an extra set to each exercise in the first superset you do

in each workout.

Again, use these three tips for an advanced fat loss period of two

weeks, then return to a normal training schedule.

But always stick to the best fat loss nutrition plan possible.

If you have any other questions, just let me know.

Sincerely,

Craig Ballantyne

Obesity Not Due to Lack of Exercise??

Children in the United States today on average are 9 pounds heavier and adults 17 pounds heavier than kids and adults 20 years ago.  According to researchers in Australia (European Association for the Study of Obesity) the obesity epidemic in the U.S. is due to over-eating but not lack of exercise.

Eating too much can lead to weight gain and obesity – that’s common sense, we all know this.  In order to lose weight we need to cut our daily caloric intake and decrease portion sizes – again common sense.  This is what the researchers are stressing.

But this study is misleading – I believe there are also enough studies to support the fact that lack of exercise leads to weight gain.  So many Americans are not meeting the 30 minute minimum daily exercise requirements.  This study makes it sound like exercise is not as important as calorie restriction.

Overeating AND lack of exercise both contribute to weight gain and obesity.  In order to lose weight and maintain heart health exercise must become part of our daily routine.  Starting slow and gradually increasing your amount of physical activity is key.  Walking is one of the best exercises, many people only think exercise means going to the gym – Any physical activity can help burn calories, improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

“Take Charge: A Woman’s Guide to a Healthier Heart” is a new book that can help women identify their risk factors for heart disease, follow a heart healthy diet and exercise program.

It's a beautiful day!

Phew! I made it to Saturday!! No school buses to get ready for, no appointments to keep! The skies are blue and the sun is shining- it is really a spectacular day! I’m going to try to ease into it slowly. I am a wee bit tired due to getting sucked into reading my book of the moment. It is Jodi Picoult’s new one. It was soooooo tempting to just read to the end, I am desperate to know how things work out for the characters, but I resisted. I did read an awful lot of it though.

So I am less than perky this morning. But what else is new? I am just not a morning person. I am in fine spirits though, even though I had the usual odd and interesting dreams last night. As I said it is a beautiful day!

I woke up today with thoughts of my current person of interest flitting through my head.We had an extremely pleasant phone conversation last night, as we do each night, and my warm fuzzy feelings carried over to this morning.

I read a cool quote yesterday, attributed to Julia Roberts, “The key to beauty is to always be looking at someone who loves you”.  It just rang so true to me about my current situation. He makes me feels beautiful and special and precious. I really like who I see reflected in his eyes!!

I’d like to like who I see reflected in the mirror a bit better too. I enjoy food too much to be too restrictive so I guess that means lots of exercise. I have been trying to cut down on eating things I know are bad for me but know I’m never going to be able to be totally ‘good’. A girl’s got to have a vice and food is my drug of choice! So I have to get off my not inconsequential butt and get moving. This is easier said than done, but I will keep you posted on my progress!!

So, today I weigh somewhere between 95 and 100 kilograms and I wear a size 18. I have been noticing things getting a little tighter and this makes me uncomfortable. I am not thrilled with the size I am but I have been able to live with it until now. Since noticing things getting tighter I am also noticing doing things is getting harder. Things are hard enough so something has to change!! Or someone, that I suspect may be me!!

So here we go! Let the games begin!

It feels good...

…to be back on track.  I am looking forward to my WW meeting tomorrow.  Getting on the scale and seeing what it says.  I know what my scale at home says…and I am very pleased.  Am going out to dinner with Sarah tonight, and want to have something yummy without over doing it…so I will need to make a good choice.

I have exercised at least 1 time every day, sometimes more than that…

Getting my heart rate up to a good level is actually kind of fun.  I love knowing that I am in control of what I eat, and how much I exercise…both of those things will show up in what happens on the scale.

I really want to get one of those Body Bugs…or something similar to it ~ so that I can really see which activities helps me get my heart rate up.

At lunch time today, I happened to be watching the news, they did a story on a company that has a “body suit” of sorts for women, and men to wear…that helps you look like you have lost 2-3 dress/pants sizes…and that because of how the suit fits, it actually helps you lose weight…so it doesnt just suck it all in, it helps it go away.  That is a little bit funny to me….but if it works, guess it could be a great tool in the weight loss journey.  I did love the fact that its a “direct” selling company…love it when good companies make the news for something good.

Hope Sarah will be home soon ~ am ready to head out for dinner.

Oh, I did get my hair cut today.  I like it, but its not really what I planned on…it may “grow” on me…we shall see, if not, another cut may be in my future.

The wall of Training.

Below is what I call my “Wall of training”

The running wall

This wall faces me everyday….

On the right and left you will several calendars….each month has my training schedule on it….

In the middle of the wall is my metals earned from previous runs….

Also in the middle is the race course map for the 2009 Royal Victoria Marathon….

This wall I am forced to look at everyday …and it gives me the motivation I need when I don’t want to run or put in the exersize that I need to….I would suggest you doing the same, perhaps place a  picture of a lost loved one in the middle of your training schedule to remind you of what you are running and training for..etc…

I find it works fantastic!

Oink, Oink my friends….

Obesity in America

Obesity is a disease that affects approximately 60 million people in the United States, where women are especially affected. Over one-third of women between the ages of 20 and 74 are obese, the majority of them being African American or Mexican American. With more and more pre-packaged food and less and less activity, the number of obese people in America has steadily increased since the 1960’s.

With obesity, comes the increased risk of diseases such as high blood pressure, Type II Diabetes, heart disease, and breast, colon, and prostate cancer. In addition, obesity has been linked to mental health conditions such as depression or feelings of shame and low self-esteem. Health experts say that even losing 10 to 15 percent of your body weight can dramatically decrease the risk of developing these serious conditions. In addition, many obese people are discriminated against and targets of insults and other verbal abuse.

It seems that if you look into any large corporation you will find that they either give large amounts of money to the studies that could hurt their business or they have someone they are paying off in the government branches that could get them shut down. This is not good for us as a people, but we are already to fat and lazy to stand up and say anything about it because that would require action.

Over 60% of Americans are overweight with about 20% of the population considered obese. While adult obesity is a major problem, the alarming increase of overweight children has tripled, from 5% to 16% between 1963 and 2002 according to the National Center for Health Statistics, which charts the most recent trends for the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here is the kicker, in an article published March 17, 2005 in the New England Journal of Medicine, University of Chicago researchers contend that life expectancy for Americans could drop by two to five years in the next half century if the current trend continues. Unlike previous studies, their calculations were not based on past mortality trends. Instead they used data on obesity rates and previously published studies on which factors contribute to obesity shortening lifespan.

Realize that there are 2 BIG factors why one gets obese:

1. We are living an inactive, deskbound lifestyle that’s stopping us from burning fats and carbs.

2. The foods we eat are jam-packed with fats and carbs contributing to weight gain…and eventually obesity.

With that in mind, here are a couple of things you can start doing today in the battle against obesity in America:

1. Start living an active lifestyle, do some heavy lifting…anything to make you sweat for 30 minutes or so. Turn it up a notch to lose weight.

2. Be alert and aware of what you’re eating. Check out the nutritional facts and if it’s jam-packed with unwanted carbs…it’s about time to replace them with healthier alternatives.

3. Set a weight loss goal in mind. One that’s explicit, to the point, and achievable. And more importantly, stick to it and nail it down!

Overweight = In debt?

Food and finances. It’s amazing to me how similar our relationship to money is to our bodies and food. I see debt as the same as overweight. Income is our exercise/energy expending; spending is our diet/nutrition.

This may seem a bit abstract (as will a lot of the things we’re going to explore here), but think about it. What we want is to be thin and healthy; we also want to be financially healthy. Financial health comes from having a good income of money and keeping our expenditures below what comes in. “Being in good shape” comes from getting enough exercise and eating enough healthy food. if you eat/spend more than you should, your “health” suffers. If you don’t exercise (earn) enough, your health suffers. You have to “work” in some way to either burn calories or bring in income. And you have to keep the other end (eating and expenses) in balance too.

Exercise for the Long Haul

Whether you are young, middle aged or elderly and overweight, exercise needs to be something that you commit to for the long haul.   If you are one of the many that makes that New Year’s resolution to exercise, and loss weight only to be done with it all by February then maybe you went at it to much to fast and therefore unable to make it sustainable.  We have ALL been there and back again.

Start out slowly. Be realistic with yourself and decide what it is you can do in the beginning with attainable goals. Then once you have reached one goal you move on to the next.  You do need a plan though so that it is visible and keeps you on track at all times.  Here are just a few simple plans that you may follow to help you keep going:

  1. This Walking Plan is just great for the beginner.  It will start you out slow and gradually get you to increase you level of activity.
  2. This one is a personal favorite.  After I turned 55 I always wanted to run a race.  Not being much of a runner I had no where to start till I found this plan.  Since then I have run a 5K and had a blast.  The plan is Couch to 5K, they have other plans too so take a look.
  3. Cycling or riding my bicycle.  People who cycle are pretty intense about what they do and it is hard to find a program centered for beginners and people that need to lose weight.  Cycling is one of the best forms of exercise for weight loss because of the low impact on joints.  This is especially important for older people that may have arthritis or other joint problems.  But I did find one plan that does address people of all ages and especially those that are trying to lose those extra pounds.  I have used this and I have found much pleasure with this plan, I am not one much for riding a bike you see.  The beginner cycling training program gives you the all that you will need to start changing up your exercise program and making it fun.
  4. Another area of exercise that any age can participate in is swimming.  Nearly everyone swims and if you are older and have those achy joints this is for you.   I truly love lap swimming in the evening before dinner.  It is so relaxing and refreshing and when I get home a salad is about all I need, a shower and I Great Night of restful sleep.   If you are a beginner swimmer or don’t know how to swim, find out if there are Red Cross lessons that would be available to you.  If that is not available there are normally classes that are offered that are aerobics in the water, which is quite a good workout actually, or weight training in the water that is also great.  I did find this beginner swimming workout that may also be of some benefit to you.  It gives you some great tips on taking it slow and using kick boards for leg workouts and for helping out when tired.

These are just a few types of exercise that I recommend.  The reason I recommend these is that they are interchangable, and that is very important in your overall exercise plan.  This helps keep your new routine fresh and challenging without getting bored.  Once you become bored you begin to lack motivation and this is all about Exercise for the Long Haul.  Do keep in mind that anything is better than nothing and it is so fun to just try something different.

Baby steps

Here’s a tip for anyone struggling to find healthy snacks in their local supermarket. Baby food. No, I’m not talking about  surviving on mashed up veg or rusks – no matter how many celebrities may have sworn they lost shed-loads of weight by eating out of a jar. I’m thinking more of the sort of snacks you can buy for toddlers – and having had two kids of my own I’m quite the connoisseur now! Below I’ve listed the sort of benefits I’ve found from swapping normal snacks for kiddie fodder -

Cereal Bars

It’s scary how many cereal bar brands are packed full with sugar – but I’ve found Organix cereal bars to be a real find – they’re low on calories and have no ‘nasties’ in them – and no added sugar at all. More importantly I find they are a delicious and satisfying treat. (I promise I’m not being paid to be this nice about them – I just really like them! There are, of course, plenty of other options – some other brands make ‘fruit bars’ which count as a portion of fruit each.)

Crisps & crackers

Again, children’s versions of crisps and crackers tend to be additive free – just check the packet before you buy – and are usually produced in very small portions. By swapping your usual bags of crisps for a child-friendly pack of ‘corn puff shapes’, you are, in my experience, consuming less than half the calories, and a fraction of the fat.

Fruit puddings

Some baby food brands make delicious fruit purees that are packed in pots, just like yogurts. Not everyone is going to like the idea of eating a puree, but I’ve found them very handy as an alternative, healthy pudding. They’re also great for swirling into plain yogurts or porridge.

Perhaps I’m the only mum who’s decided to have a sneaky taste of what she’s been feeding her little ones and thought “Mmm…not bad!” In which case, I’m a freak! But it works for me. A piece of fruit, would of course, be the healthiest snack of all, but all the above have often helped to me keep boredom at bay when I’m doing my best to have a wholesome day. By the way, you’ll usually have to head to the baby food section of your local shop to have a chance of finding any of these – most supermarkets keep them all together like this.

Genetics does play a role in obesity, of course, but not as big a role as you do. Most health experts say that the concept of genes compelling you to be heavy is a myth.

Does Anyone Know What a Balanced Diet Is?

People tell you that low fat is the way to go, others say the opposite. Why all the fuss over food? Surely we have bigger fish to fry like the economy, global warming or terrorism. But for the 97.1 million adults and 6.7 million children and teens who are overweight, for moms trying to make the right decisions for their families and for healthcare professionals. This food fight is a war that needs attention now.

Back in 1956 The USDA published a pamphlet. It was educational information for the public and it was called “Food for Fitness—a Daily Food Guide.”  The primary purpose of the basic four food groups was to ensure adequate nutrient consumption. I vaguely remember the jingle that was used to educate us about the four food groups, “Four, four, three, two that’s the way for me and you.” The groups were breads (4), fruits and veggies (4), meat (3) and dairy (2) respectively. Each group was represented in the shape of a square and neatly stacked into a larger square.

Carbohydrates are not essential nutrients, yet based on current standards recommendations include 6-11 servings of low fat, high carbohydrate foods including bread, pasta, rice, cereal. Eleven servings from this group translates into approximately 1000 calories. Quite frankly these are generally processed foods that contain little fiber or nutrients, without fortification. If you look at the portions that equal a serving, you can see how easy it is to overeat these foods. One portion of rice or pasta is 1/3-1/2 cup.

Here’s The Shocker: You expect to be eating healthy low fat foods but most of these foods contain trans fat, added sugar, high fructose sugar and other additives that can affect hunger, weight and hunger. For many people the sugar load from the food alone, sans additives, is enough to turn them into a classic case of Dr. Jeckyll, Mr. Hyde. *

How did it come to pass that the nation follows a food pyramid that directs consumers to eat up to 11 servings of bread, cereal, rice and pasta? Well, it may be as simple as politics and a rush to judgment by healthcare leaders who may not have considered that things are not always what they appear to be. The monetary gain for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the governing body responsible for this recommendation, (not objective research or from nutritionists) is obvious.

There is no direct evidence that supports eating more foods like bread, cereal and pasta and that these foods are better than eating more vegetables. The health benefits of real food such as, vegetables, nuts/seeds, eggs/meat/fish poultry and fruits vs. the processed foods that are typically consumed at each meal: cereal, bagels, muffins, pasta, white bread and white rice are neglected by the USDA pyramid. Green leafy vegetables, more than any other foods, should be consumed in the greatest amounts and found at the bottom of the pyramid. Vegetables contain the least amount of calories and have very little amounts of carbs and fat. They are also packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients. There is abundant research supporting the health benefits of vegetables. Now, if you just can’t seem to get in enough veggies or just want to give yourself a boost. I can’t say enough about GREENS Plus® Wild Berry Burst: http://greensplus.com/product_info.php/cPath/84_21_23/products_id/130

One daily serving delivers the nutritional equivalent of more than five full servings of fresh fruit and vegetables.

There was one $885,000 study carried out by a private firm in 1991 that tested the educational value of the pyramid on individuals with minimal education and children to determine its value. And “voi-la”, the food pyramid was born.  This is a far cry from all the noise made about the need for studies (not one but many) that support a different view of a healthy diet.

America evolved into a country that prided itself on “bigger is better” (cars, electronics, portion sizes), convenience (Drive-in and then Drive-thru services), and value of the dollar (larger portions, the buffet and of course the value meal). Looking back, no matter what types of food we ate we should have suspected that the strides we made would set us up for the weight and health issues we face now. Not many would predict it would take its toll on the Nations weight and health as it has….But it has.

So here we are with this BIG problem, everything and almost everyone is BIG!

Common sense would suggest that it is important to eat a variety of foods and balance the food groups. So, here’s what I suggest.

First scale back the breads, cereals, pasta etc…to bring your body into balance. Once you feel and look a little better, try to balance essential nutrients (healthy fats and proteins) with carbohydrates. Check out:

On the Road

Sorry I haven’t posted a more upbeat post since my last downer. I’m doing a lot beter now! I’ve been traveling with my daughter’s crew team – they are at their regional championships this weekend and I am in charge of all travel details: hotels, dinners for 300, etc! so I’ve been a busy bee.

I’ve been really so busy that I forgot my blood testing kit. I am hoping that I’m OK but I feel good and I just have to trust that I’m not going out of control. I have to say it’s kind of a relief to be without the thing for a few days and to let myself feel a little “normal.” Of course, I don’t have a scale either and it is really nice to have an escape from the numbers for a little while. I contemplated going to a WW meeting while here – my normal meeting day is Saturday- but I think I will wait till I’m home on Monday.

Did I tell y’all I went to that Weight Watchers leader recruitment meeting last week? It was interesting. I think I’m gonna go for it. I love and miss teaching (I’ve been teaching writing since 1994 but recently have not been teaching so much and I miss it). I have a formal interview with the regional director of WW on Tuesday. I’ve been thinking a lot about how teaching writing and teaching healthy living/weight loss are similar, or could be, or here is my pitch about why I think I’d be a goood WW leader!  So many people say they’ve “always wanted to write” but don’t believe they can.  Same with weight loss/healthy lifestyle, right?  Well I know I’ve been very capable of breaking things down for beginning writers, to help them feel excited and successful very soon. I am really good at validating peoples’ positive efforts and for showing them what they are doing right. I think so many of these same things are important in weight loss. So I hope it works out. We shall see.

I’ve been running a bit along the lake where the races are being held. Both yesterday and today I noticed that the first 10 minutes or so of a run are killer. I am full of pain – my groin, my feet, my shin, and I’m out of breath. It pretty much feels awful. And then BAM, after I hit the 11th minute or so, ALL of my pains just VANISH, my breathing is easy, and the running truly feels effortless. I feel like I could go on forever. Yesterday I ran about 35 minutes, and today around 25, and walked a bunch. Both times the same thing happened.

Anyway, busy times around here. Tonight, Chevy’s is catering dinner at our race site for 300. I am not worried about it at all, in fact I am excited about it. Things have really changed.

Egg beaters can suck

I started eating egg beaters because my dad got me into them. I bought south western and really enjoyed them so I decided to buy more. I baked the original in the microwave today and I almost cryed when I tasted them! They were worse than eating rubber bands! I cooked them for the correct time and they were so gross I had to dump em and go with some damn granola bar. I put them in for 1:30. If I did something wrong please let me know. Because I know they can be good! But this was sick nasty!

Name that blog

Yesterday, I reached in my back pocket and pulled out a British coin.  That’s because I hadn’t worn those trousers since we lived in London.  Which is my way of saying I am fitting into clothes that I last wore before I got pregnant with Lilah.  Either the breastfeeding is starting to pay off or the flu I had two weeks ago had some side benefits.

***********

I am going to start a book review blog.  It’s going to be super cool because I will be writing about books in much the same way I write about everything else.  So, it might be just a little irreverent or edgy and certainly won’t be anything you’d find in the NY Times (sad to say, because I’d love to be found in the NY Times).  But, I need a name for this blog.  So, please, tell me what to call my book review blog.  Think of a kickin’ title, because I suck at titles (except for the article I wrote about Dreiser’s anxiety about the theater, which I titled “Performance Anxiety” — that was a good title.)

Weekly Weigh In

Starting Weight: 84.5kg (185.9 lbs)

Last Week’s Weight:73.9.9kg (162.6 lbs)

This Week’s Weight: 74.2kg (163.2 lbs)

This Week’s Gain: 0.3kg (0.7 lbs)

Total Loss: 10.3kg (22.7 lbs)

Hip to Waist Ratio: 0.86

Waist: 85 cm (33.5 inches)

Hips: 98.5 cm (38.8 inches)

BMI: 24.23

Body Fat Last Week: 31.38%

Body Fat This Week: 30.69%

A gain of 300 grams this week.  To be honest, I am not all that upset about this.  I went off my diet half way through this week and whilst I didn’t make any truly awful food choices,  my diet wasn’t as good as it could have been.  Also, I didn’t exercise as much as I normally do.

Exercise

Pretty pathetic this week and I have no excuses.  I just lost motivation.  Hopefully I will have a better week next week.

Losing Weight Naturally

Once we accept we are overweight, we usually want to trim down as fast as possible for a whole lot of reasons, some related to health, others having to do with looks.

But what weight loss program do you follow? How to choose among the myriad of diets and weight and fat loss programs out there. Do you try losing weight naturally, chose an extreme diet program where you are required to starve or exercise until you drop, only to find that the program that you have chosen doesn’t work!

The failure of many weight loss programs does not necessarily lie with the program itself but the users failing to follow them due to incredibly stringent demands!

Get expert advise before starting any weight loss or exercise program and read up on all you need to know before drastically changing your lifestyle. What may work for others may not work for you.

Try to follow a plan that works with your individual needs, you can avoid common diet pitfalls and make important lifestyle changes that can help you find long-term, healthy weight loss success

Be realistic with your weight loss program. It’s not too difficult to find the answer. Maybe you need to cut out the junk food or binge eating and exercise more. You just have to read all that you need to know about how to prevent being overweight.

Choose a diet plan that you feel you can stick to. Do not skip meals. Skipping meals slicks the body into slowing down the metabolism, attempting to conserve calories during a period where limited fats and fuel are available. Remember that eating increases the metabolism.

Almost every major system in your body relates to your metabolism and your ability to lose weight and keep it off. Drinking hot water instead of cold water in the morning can increase the speed of your metabolism and burn more calories

Losing weight naturally begins with healthy eating plus learning about nutrition and how to prepare healthy recipes. A reasonable approach for losing weight naturally is to stick to a diet that is high in complex carbohydrates, high in fibre, moderate in protein, and low in fat.

If you want to try losing weight naturally, you have to keep track of every food you eat and of every activity that you do. When you say natural weight loss, that means you do not have to use some accessories or helpful aids just to lose weight.

Losing weight naturally is a process and not a fad. Hence, it can take a lot of dogged determination, self-control, and discipline just to achieve your ideal weight.

But don’t make it hard for yourself. You don’t have to be isolated. Look for a weight loss “buddy,” club, or support mates. This will motivate you to stay and enjoy your weight loss program.

Information contained in this article is not meant to replace professional advice. Always check with your physician before starting any weight loss or exercise program.

Laziness is...

Copying a post from a message board, just because it’s late & I want to go to sleep, but I wanted to do a post tonight. Which doesn’t make sense because I’m now doing a post! Well a short one anyway.

Went to weightwatchers tonight, have been going for the past two months and so far I’d lost 9 and a half pounds. However tonight I’d gone up half a pound. And I know it’s my own fault, had a fair bit of alcohol at the weekend & probably ate too much sweets, but they were there & I wanted them! So when I got home, I did nearly 45 minutes on the wii fit, and I’ll do the same tomorrow evening if it’s raining. But if it’s dry, then it’s a six mile walk before I go to bingo with the girls!

Who says SPAM comments can't be fun?

So, a SPAMbot recently left a comment on Moar Omegle Lulz. Her name (I don’t know why I think it’s a she, but yeah, gender bias ftw) was the ever-so-subtle With This Diet I Shed Thirty Póunds in Thirty Days, and her comment?

Hi, nice post. I have been wondering about this issue, so thanks for blogging. I’ll likely be subscribing to your blog. Keep up the good posts.

Well, if it’s one thing Moar Omegle Lulz did, it’s tackle the hard-hitting issue of MissyElliotting with a journalistic force the likes of which the world has never known.

Now, I’m gunna crawl back into my hole and finish this crappy essay.

What is Child Obesity

Childhood obesity has become a dramatic problem in not only the United States but also in other developed countries of the world. The childhood problem stems from a condition whereas excess body fat begins to negatively affect the child’s well being and health. Since the presence of childhood obesity has such a vast effect upon a child’s health the problem is considered by many physicians to be of paramount importance and has been designated as a serious childhood health concern.

Sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits are the most prominent factor causing child obesity. Low physical activity makes child more capable of storing fat. Due to lack of physical activity they burn fewer calories than what they consume. So to accelerate calorie burn, they need to take active part in outdoor games and sports. Diet is another factor that must be taken into consideration. Low fat, low sugar diets have proved to be safer and healthier food for growing children.

Facts of childhood obesity:-

•    Carelessness in food, alarming increase in the number of children and teenagers developing Type-2 Diabetes (also termed as adult-onset diabetes) due to being overweight.

•    High levels of cholesterol and high blood pressure, that are some main risk factors for development of heart diseases are found in most of the obese children.

•    Sleep Apnea is considered as the most severe problem faced by obese children. In the sleep apnea (interruption of breath while sleeping) may lead to other problems like difficulty in learning and memory.

•    Overweight children are on higher risk of developing liver diseases, orthopedic problems and asthma.

•    70% oboist teenagers retain their overweight and obese condition even during their adulthood.

Treatment for Obesity:

1. If you head out to a restaurant with your child, always ask about smaller portion sizes. The portions served in restaurants today are a LOT larger than they were 25 years ago, so keep an eye out for this. I can guarantee that if you don’t, the restaurant will serve your child the regular GIANT serving.

2. Try changing from whole milk to 1 percent milk. It’s a small change I know, but it can have a very positive impact over the long run.

3. Try switching your child off of pop and onto the different flavors of V8 juice. Since kids love to drink juice anyway, you might as well make it something that is great for them.

4. If you’re not using sweet potatoes in your meal plans now, try adding them in. They’re much healthier and they taste great.

5. Remember this - if you are going to feed your child high calorie foods - the best portion size is small. But if you are going to feed them vegetables (which you should), the best portion size is large.

6. Try and cut out the mayo - replace it with mustard or ketchup, as on a small fast-food burger.

7. Remember soup! That old stand by. There are tons of soups available (vegetable is a great one) that you can serve your kids and most of them don’t add on a ton of calories.

Grrr

Thanks to a Nyquil induced haze, I missed my meeting this morning. Probably for the best - I don’t  need to go infecting people with whatever it is I have. So, no weigh in (boo!) today. I’ll have to go to a different meeting later in the week. Thanks to a Nyquil induced haze, I missed my meeting this morning. Probably for the best - I don’t  need to go infecting people with whatever it is I have. So, no weigh in (boo!) today. I’ll have to go to a different meeting later in the week.

The good news? I’m feeling SOOOOOO much better now! All of this resting has definitely paid off. I almost feel like I’ll be back to normal tomorrow *knocks wood*. Things I will definitely be doing tomorrow: hitting the gym (oh, how I have missed thee!), grocery shopping, finding a replacement meeting, writing an honest to goodness post on this thing, and eating some sushi!! I have the biggest craving for it right now! MMMM…salmon nigiri!

In other (way more exciting) news . . . I am now a part of the Twittersphere! @Stephie_Jean - I’d love it if you followed me! =D
