In the First 60 Minutes…

You always hear how drinking soda is bad for you, but nobody really tells you why. Sure you know there are sugars, caffeine, and other chemically processed stuff that is bad for you; but you tend to ignore what you hear. Most people will not believe something or ignore something if they cannot physically see what actually happens.

Not only will you be able to lose up to 20 pounds in year if you stop drinking soda, you will allow your body to function normally without any outside interference. Soda is just like a drug (a mild drug, but still a drug). Stop drinking soda and increase your health dramatically.

Here is what happens to your body within the first hour after consuming a soda:

  • In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
  • 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
  • 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
  • 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
  • >60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
  • >60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
  • >60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

Now put that soda down and start weaning yourself off this nasty drug!

The Biggest Weight Loss Myth…

The only question I heard today from numerous clients and potential clients is,

“How do I lose weight, tone-up my stomach, but not get bulky?”

Where to start…basically this is how I respond to that question.

1. To gain huge amounts of muscle to make you bulky takes time. You also have to eat to gain muscle and create a muscle building atmosphere with in your body. That means eating over a gram of protein per bodyweight. Along with protein your body needs to be producing testosterone to help build muscle. The average person does not eat that much protein to build lots amounts of muscle. For women, you have lower testosterone levels to start with, so it’s that much harder to build huge bulky muscles! To sum up, you can lift heavy (8-15 reps) and not gain crazy amounts of muscle.

2. No matter how hard you try, you cannot spot reduce! You can do 3000 sit-ups a day and your stomach will be just as big as it is now. To lose body fat in any area of the body, you have to lose body fat as a whole. General body fat loss will lead to body fat lose in the stomach over time.

3. Now to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you eat, through dieting and exercise. Long bouts of cardio are okay, but to keep off the weight you lose, you need to gain quality lean muscle mass while reducing body fat. How do you do that? A strength training program coupled with a cardio program. It takes more calories to sustain muscle than body fat. So, as you gain muscle, you raise your metabolism, helping to burn off more calories. Sounds easy, right!

So to review, a quality exercise routine full of strength training and cardio will lead to overall body fat loss. Overall body fat loss will lead to general reduction in the stomach area. Since you where strength training as you lost body fat, you are actually defining your muscle to look great once you reach your goal weight (toning-up).

DIVINE Testimonial - "Love the Taste, Losing Weight"

Below is one of the many testimonials we have received from customers of DIVINE Garden Botanical Blend:

I have been taking Divine Garden Botanicals for a couple of weeks now. I am a 47 year old Mother.

I live a healthy lifestyle, take supplements and work out. I decided to try Divine Botanical because

I knew that the ingredients that it has are all natural but also because I do not get anything like that

from the supplements on the market. I was surprised that I love the taste and my biggest surprise has been

that I seem to be losing the fat around my middle!  It has always been my problem, this fat on my belly and it just got worse with childbirth

as it does for most women. All the exercising and diet would not take it away. Now I know you are not claiming this

to be a benefit but to me it is!!! I will continue taking Divine Botanicals and cannot wait to see what else it does for me!

Vicky T. from Springboro, OH

We’d love to hear from you!  If you have a story or testimonial that you’d love to share, email us!

Without a Diet Plan your Weight Loss Plan is Doomed

Most people don’t realize that without a proper diet, their weight loss goals are doomed to fail. This is because diet takes the cake for 70% of your weight loss results. In other words, don’t think that working out alone will get you to your weight loss goals.

Unfortunately, for those who hate to diet and workout, it takes a combination of Diet, Strength Training, and Cardiovascular exercises to lose weight the right way. Any combination other than the three will not work.

Invest in a Nutrition plan. The definition of eating to lose weight is consuming less calories than you take in. Personal Trainers such as myself are able to create custom Meal Plans which eliminate the guess work and cater to your dietary requirements and preferences. After you invest in the plan, follow it.

It may take a while to get used to, but the results will be well worth it. In most cases you will find that you are eating 5 to 6 mini meals a day…more than you are accustomed to eating. You will feel better about yourself too!

Here are a few diet tips that I give to my Nutrition clients;

  • Don’t skip breakfast. It revs-up your metabolism for the day.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Avoid eating out.
  • Enjoy salads for at least 1 meal per day

Interested in a custom Nutrition plan? Email me at info@nikolklein.com.

Drink Beer, Get Slim?

If you sport a beer belly as a consequence of, well, drinking too much beer at your local public house, then it might well be time to rethink your drinking habits. Assuming you don’t plan to abstain altogether, then ensure each trip to the pub is a mammoth calorie burning expedition.
Change the venue so that the pub is no longer local or plan a circuitous route to reach your regular haunt. One hour walking at a moderate pace (dog walking speed) will burn 246 calories, and then hope the entrance is located at the top of a flight of stairs (563 calories). Having finally reached your favoured establishment, decide on your sport; pool or darts. Each will burn around 175 calories and can work the core muscles (needed for stability in each case), and darts will exercise the brain slightly if you start to consider the parabolic flying curve taken during the dart’s travel. A few drinks down the line, consider taking to the dance floor to burn a very respectable 317 calories or impress your friends with a vigorous air guitar display, burning 211 calories in the process.
(based on a 155lb person doing the activity for one hour. www.nutristrategy.com)

Thighs & Legs Workouts

Thigh & leg workout

This is a short one from me today. I hope you all had a great weekend.  And I will be back with more next Sunday.

Trouble spots, be gone! Get a longer, leaner look with these exercises and workouts designed to trim your thighs and sculpt your legs.  I know how frustrating cellulite can be, I used to have so called “dimples” and I tried everything, but there’s nothing like the right nutrition plan and the work out routine.  Nothing else works, but you have to commit.

Sculpt a gravity-defying butt and sexy legs, hips, and thighs with these five easy exercises. Pendulum Lift

What you’ll need: A step and a pair of 5-pound dumbbells.

  • Stand with right foot on step and left foot hanging off back, holding a dumbbell in each hand, arms by sides, palms facing back.
  • Keeping right leg slightly bent, hinge forward from hips while lifting left leg behind you until body is almost parallel to floor and hands hang below shoulders.
  • Return to start. Do 15 reps.
  • Switch legs; repeat.
One-and-a-Half Squat

Targets: Butt, quads, and hamstrings

  • Stand on step with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand, arms by sides, palms facing in.
  • Squat until thighs are near parallel to floor, keeping knees behind toes and back straight.
  • Rise halfway; hold for 2 seconds. Lower into full squat.
  • Return to start. Do 15 reps.
Knee Pump

Targets: Hips, butt, and hamstrings

  • Stand on step with feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand, elbows bent, palms facing in.
  • Lean upper body forward slightly and lunge straight back to floor with right leg (don’t bend knee).
  • Keep bent left knee behind toes.
  • Lift right leg, bringing right knee and left hand up toward chest. Lunge right leg back; lower left arm.
  • Do 15 reps. Switch legs; repeat.
Single-Leg Raise

Targets: Calves

  • Stand on step with right foot in center, left forefoot on edge (heel hanging off, but not below step level), holding a dumbbell in each hand, arms by sides, palms facing in.
  • Balancing on ball of left foot, lift right foot a few inches in front of you. Raise left heel as high as you can, then lower, keeping right leg straight and lifted throughout.
  • Do 15 reps; switch legs and repeat.

No Diet Without Detox

If you’ve experienced any of the health problems I described in the quiz on my detox diet blog, you may already suspect a link between pollution and your health. But even if you’ve been feeling strong and healthy, you should be aware that, like Rome and the others in her study, you’ve almost certainly absorbed an enormous body burden of toxins, most of which are stored in your fat.

That brings me to a profound irony. Many of us decide to lose weight precisely because we value our health. Yet losing excess weight can actually weaken our defenses against these deadly chemicals. As our fat melts away, it releases the toxins that have been stored there, putting us at risk for new health problems, even as losing weight solves some of the old ones.

That’s why I believe our 21st-century slogan must be ‘No Diet Without Detox!’ Finding away to cleanse our bodies of the toxins that flood our environment is crucial for all of us, and even more urgent for those of us who are losing weight. Otherwise, we’re not only at the mercy of toxins in our environment but, by going on our diets and losing weight, also literally poisoning ourselves.

All About Portion Control

We tell patients all the time to be careful with portion sizes as a tool for successful weight loss. For instance, the idea that “a 4 oz. serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards” is common advice. Yet there’s not a lot of actual research showing that portion control alone will help with weight loss. A group of researchers at the University of Calgary designed a study to test how well portion control might help you eat healthier. Read More

Top 3 Ways to Stick to Your Diet

90% of people who start a diet fail!

That’s a lot of people and chances are you are one of them. I have even been one of the 90% myself! There are many obstacles to sticking with your diet and most people do not address them or even worse they do acknowledge those obstacles, accept them, and don’t try to diet because they know they will fail!

You have to understand what obstacles lay ahead and have a game plan to overcome those obstacles. Not trying because or think you will just fail anyway is never going to bring you closer to your weight loss goals.

So, let’s jump in and look at 3 obstacles that cause most people to fail.

1. Unrealistic Goals. If you think you can drop 10 pounds the first month you diet, well think again! Be realistic, the first month of dieting is going to be your hardest because you are changing the way you eat! You may see some changes but they most likely will be small ones.

2. Starvation Diets. If you want to lose weight and think you just want eat anything, that is also unrealistic. You body needs nutrients. If you go a long period without eating, you will end up gorging at some point throughout the day. Break you meals down into smaller meals, spaced throughout the day and you will find that you will be hungry less and eat less food!

3. Track Your Diet. I know, writing down what you eat is boring, takes too much time, and you just don’t feel like doing it! When you first begin the diet you need to track what you eat. This will help make you accountable for what you eat and show you what foods you need to change. If you have to write down and see that you just eat 1 whole pizza for 800 calories, then you will be more inclined to change your habits because it will seem more real. There are a ton of online tools to make tracking your diet so much more simple then writing everything down, plus the iphone has over a 100 different apps to help also!

As you can see, these dieting mistakes are very common and most people break them everyday! Knowing these obstacles lay ahead and having a proper plan will help you overcome them and accomplish your weight loss goals!

Write a Fan Letter

I am not starting this post with a poem about fan letters.  I have never written a fan letter.   I don’t know why.  But now that I am blogging, I must have happy fingers or the muse because I wrote my first fan letter….to Gary Null of Gary Null’s Ultimate Anti-Aging Program.  Now, you might wonder why I chose this book.  My first fan letter should have come after a tearful and pensive closing to a romantic or mind altering book by some author like Anne Tyler, Tobias Wolff, Paul Coehlo, Tom Clancey, Ian McEwan, Anchee Min, Lisa See, John Grisham, Maya Angelou, etc.

I believe we always honor our fiction writers more.  BUT, NOT I.  I think that if someone writes a book that has no plot except to get me off my —chair—and into the gym and makes me stop drinking so much diet soda,  I want to HONOR that author.  Write on.

I don’t intend this to be a book review, but Mr. Null covers the following topics in a logical and interesting manner, so you feel you can start right away.  Boy, do I need it.

He covers: the theory of aging, all the serious diseases and how to protect yourself from them, life extention techniques,  the Ultimate Anti Aging program and diet, exercise,  the importance of warm ups and cool downs, aerobics, food, meal planning, how to keep  your mind active and healthy, vitamins and other supplements, and RECIPES.   This is a great book.

Ok.. I actually wrote a fan e-mail. Happily,  I received a quick response from Mr. Null who told me someone on his staff  would check-in on my blog to see how I was doing and I would receive  2 behavior DVDs.

My first venture into fan letter writing went well.  Next time,  I will have to try sending a letter to a Nobel laureate whose book I love and see what happens.

Associations with People and Their Attitudes

Throughout my disciplined areas in life, I’ve come to learn that we quickly make and break associations with people based on the direction in life we take.  This can work both positively and negatively.

Frankly, this was a difficult lesson that I have had to learn repeatedly while making positive changes for myself.  This can apply to so many areas of life, but we often delude ourselves into thinking we can keep old associations in tact and still change as people.

Note: While I am not suggesting to go and cut ties with every person you have ever known, I am encouraging you to take an “inventory” of people in your life.  During the transitory periods of our lives, those choices are absolutely crucial to our success–or our imminent failure.

Why is it important to distance from people who do not share our new lifestyle or belief?

1. People who are not making positive changes for themselves will often resent YOUR positive changes, and may even unconsciously try to pull you back into your “old” self.

This is why weight-loss buddies and spiritual groups are essential for the survival of the “new” self, at least in the beginning.  We need people who are going to cheer us on through the tough times, support us when we most want to fail, and who can remind us that we are doing the right thing.

How many times have you heard snide comments from people who aren’t diligently working to improve their lives?  They’ll say something like… “Oh, that’s right, you don’t eat ______.” OR “Too bad you don’t get to sleep in on Sunday.”

These comments can make us feel very excluded, and to avoid feeling like the oddball, we sacrifice the very things that will improve us.

2. The attitudes of others reflect the attitudes we have of ourselves.

If you are finding yourself surrounded by negative, whiney people all the time, why do you think it’s difficult for you to remain positive in your personal goals?  If you think that you will miss these people, try going without speaking to them for a month and see how much lighter you feel… and notice that the scale is affected.  Notice also how your attitudes toward yourself improve over time when more positive people are introduced.

A few months ago, I finally dealt with the “baggage” of several very negative people who were in my life.  I actually lost several pounds after lightening my emotional load without changing a thing.

The baggage we carry around from the past weighs us down.  Deal with the negative influences in your life and start introducing positive things that uplift you and lighten you.

3. We cannot live two lives.  We cannot be two separate people.

Those who try to keep the same friends with similar destructive habits will eventually fall victim again to those very vicious cycles that we are trying to discard.  Many people who want to be thin don’t actually want to make the necessary changes; they unconsciously want to retain all of their bad habits.  Many people seeking “spiritual growth” often do not really want to change; they just want to feel better about their bad habits and be a victim.

You cannot have your cake and eat it, too. (Really, the phrase should be: you cannot eat your cake and have it, too.)

There are unfortunate side-effects that occur when we make positive changes for ourselves.  Some people will have the understanding and wisdom that, while the side effects may be painful initially, they are better for us in the long-run.  Others will try to cling to the old life, constantly having one foot in and one foot out.

The “friends” who were negative about my weight-loss and marathon running were surprisingly not that difficult to let go of once I realized their negative influence.  Soon, new, healthier, and more positive people came into my life who were congruent with the style of life that I wanted to lead.

Choose your friends wisely and consciously during your period of change.  This does not mean you have to cut everyone out immediately.  Some of them will come back into your life, and some of them won’t.  This is a necessary sacrifice you must make if you want lasting change.

4. There will always be a “delicious distraction.” ALWAYS.

What is a delicious distraction?

This is a favorite phrase of my Teacher, and one that has become useful to me in spotting things that are merely tools to pull me off of my Path.  Now, he means this in the Spiritual sense, but I’m sure the rest of you can make the connection with weight-loss.  A delicious distraction can come in the form of a nice new job that will pull us away from spending time with loved ones, or it can simply be an invitation to go to a huge outdoor bar-b-que instead of doing your long run for the day.

We must discipline ourselves to say no to things that might be tempting and otherwise look wonderful, but that we know will eventually cause harm to us.

5. Making choices means MAKING choices.

When you signed up to lose weight or get involved in spirituality, perhaps you didn’t understand that this choice would lead to other difficult choices.  Sometimes the choices aren’t always clear, but most of the time people know what is and isn’t best for them.  There is an opportunity in each and every thing we do to be great or to be mediocre.  Do you choose greatness on a consistent basis, or do you choose mediocrity?  Do you make excuses for yourself, or are you consistently making choices that are congruent with the things you are trying to achieve?

P90X - day07

Hi,

for some sunday is an uneventful day, I might just be one of these people. Though, this fire alarm at midnight right now might make this day interesting after all…those are the fire department trucks outside the apartment complex and the fire alarm didn’t go off for more than an hour.

Here is a shout out to Dwayne in BC, Canada, thinking about pushing the play button for P90X. Doo eet!

Well then, let’s take a look at what I did today on day 07. Click on the thumbnails to get to my Flickr account and see them pictures in a higher resolution

shitty OS, has shitty icon

Nutrition:

breakfast:
1 multivitamin
1 creatine pill
3 slices turkey bacon
1 cheese scramble
12 oz skim milk
1/4 cantaloupe

how to prepare:
- 8 whole egg whites, 3 tablespoons skim milk, 3 ounces mozzarella cheese
- just make it happen
cheese scramble: done

notes:
I used 1 ounce of regular cheddar cheese and 1 ounce of low fat mozzarella, no milk, added a scoop of protein powder to my milk so I don’t gag on the white milk. Maybe my gag reflex is a racist?

Picture of breakfast:

snack:
1 protein bar
notes:
since i don’t have protein bars I substitute it with 1 granola bar and an apple.

lunch:
1 tuna salad
3 cups salad greens
2 cups cucumber soup

how to prepare:
- 8 ounces tuna, 1 ounce low fat mayonnaise, 3/4 teaspoons lemon zest, squeeze of lemon, 2 tablespoons carrots, 2 tablespoons celery, 2 tablespoons green onion, 1-1/2 teaspoons celery seeds
- mix ingredients thoroughly
tuna salad: done

notes:
Used my leftover soup, the red pepper/gazpacho one, I also used some of the left over napa cabbage instead of salad. I mean why let that go to waste. Last but not least I used low fat/calorie caesar dressing and threw in half a tomato for good measures.

Picture of lunch:

snack:
12 oz cottage cheese, 1%

notes:
F**K me sideways. Eminem even dedicated a song to the very nature of cottage cheese I think, watch from 15 secs on…seriously, I think I will drop down one food level so I have to eat less of this.

dinner:
8 oz lemon garlic chicken
1 cup wild rice
2 cups asparagus soup
2 tbsp protein powder

how to prepare:
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoons molasses, 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce, 4 garlic cloves, 2 pounds boneless chicken, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, lemon wedges, parsley
- combine first 4 ingredients
- marinate for 1 hour in fridge
- back at 425 degrees for 20 minutes, bast occasionally
- back another 20 minutes without basting
lemon garlic chicken: done

notes:
I just used some of my left over 8 ounces chicken that I had kicking around from the other day, I thought I would just add this to my dish:

gag factor 4, maybe even 12

Put 1 scoop of protein powder in my water, used the rest of my ‘red gazpepper soup’ but seriously that bitter aftertaste of that sauce, I still can’t get it out of my head. I had something totally different in my mind when I bought it, maybe I have to mallow it down somehow?

Picture of dinner:

Post workout:
-

Before going to bed:
1 multivitamin
1 creatine pill

Workout:

Day 07 means optional workout, that optional workout being stretch x. I don’t think that a 7th day is necessary for workout, as a matter of fact I think that it is imperative to really relax on day ix7 (where i = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, etc) so your body can recuperate from all the hard workouts. Hard workouts put stress on your body, your muscle fibers have micro tears after workouts, which causes soreness and they can only be repaired if sufficient rest is there and sufficient nutrients. So I say take the day off.

galactic war = struggle to get in shape

If you dare to want to try it out, ie if you feel sprite enough then go ahead, what awaits you is a 1 hour light stretch yoga-ish workout. I rather take that one hour to prepare some of raw ingredients for the next week, ie precook the chickens, fishes, rice, soups, wash my laundry, have a long relaxing bath with candle lights and music (wut?).

Take the time to be prodocutive in other areas, and get back for more on monday for day08

Timberlake's dog can talk?

P90X Day 07: done

On a side note, I really am contemplating dropping down to level 1 from level 2, at least for a week to see how and if I could cope with less calorie intake. I just think some of these portions are too big for me, I mean don’t get me wrong I can eat, a lot, but sometimes I have a hard time finishing some of these dishes, i mean 8 ounces of meats for lunch and dinner? 8 egg whites. I mean thats a lot. So I will try out level 1 for a week, or recalculate how close I am to that level. I really don’t want to collapse during my workout but I also feel a definite pressure to get ripped due to this blog.

Feel free to leave some comments, questions and suggestions. Feel free to use the top menu to navigate our blog for older posts regarding P90X, Apple/Mac, Marketing, Internet, WoW. Please spread the news about this little blog and feel free to hit that digg button.

Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Society sets women up to believe that the transition into the cessation of periods is a turbulent, symptomatic whirlwind consisting of hot flashes, mood changes, night sweats, cravings, weight gain, and hair growth in unwelcome places just to name a few. However, this need not be the case. Obviously, prevention is the key, and if one has been living a healthy lifestyle incorporating whole food nutrition, stress reduction techniques, and regular exercise, this transition can be a smooth process with very little additional support needed. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Let me assure you, it isn’t.

 Progesterone Fact Sheet

1. Women need an equal balance of both estrogen and progesterone for their bodies to be hormonally balanced. This is a well known medical fact, not new to the medical profession.
