If you love the five-week holiday festivities from Thanksgiving to New Year’s, but are already stressing about the added stomach fat you’ll have to sweat off come Jan. 1, help is at hand. It’s possible to enjoy holiday eating and make it to 2010 weighing the same as you do today. It’s all about devising a strategy and thinking about holiday food just a little differently. Try this:
Eat before you go. Starving guests are more apt to load up their plates, so have a piece of fruit smeared with peanut butter or a small container of yogurt prior to heading out.
Think ”pick and choose,” not ‘’sample.” Picking and choosing is a great strategy if it involves picking the one dessert or other goodie you love and can’t live without. Instead of sampling all three pies at a holiday dinner, decide which one you really like.
Remember, alcohol is loaded with calories. Start off at a party with seltzer water or sparkling water, then switch to alcoholic beverages.
Take control as hostess. Take advantage of that, prepare or serve [ready-make] broth-based soups that are packed with vegetables as a first course. Switch from buffets to meals served by the course to pace eating. It’s probable you’ll eat less overall that way.
If you love gravy, make it from fat-free broth. Include more casserole dishes — you can increase the vegetables with hardly anyone noticing.
Move, even a little. Squeezing in a little exercise, no matter how hectic the schedule, will help.
Defend your resolve. Even with the best strategies in play, some people fall apart when face-to-face with those holiday hosts and hostesses who encourage you to eat.
You can resist them with a compliment like: “I love your pie, but I am full.”
When it comes to fat loss and losing weight there is an overwhelming amount of information. If you’re like most people who want to lose weight you may feel somewhat bewildered and confused by all the diet and nutrition advice given by so many different fat loss experts. The tough part is that much of this advice overlooks the basic physiological premise for weight loss and long-term health – alkalinity!
Our bodies operate within a fine pH equilibrium. If we are too acidic, we invite disease and “fatness” to grow rampant. 2-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling, was the first to show to that cancer cannot grow in an alkaline environment. Many years later, though, most people have no idea what being alkaline means.
Being alkaline means not being acidic. The most important bodily tissue – our blood – requires a slightly alkaline pH to operate perfectly. If not, red blood cells begin to die, coagulate, and expel their waste into the blood. Oxygen transport to the cells becomes compromised and the body begins removing dangerous acid out from the blood and storing in our fat cells.
The body’s fat cells hold onto this acid as a protective mechanism since acid in the blood or vital organs can be lethal. Therefore, your ability to burn fat is related to your body’s acid-alkaline balance. You will find it very hard lose fat if you are acidic. It’s simple – your body needs to keep the fat around to hold onto to the acid. Once the acid lessens, the fat will follow.
So when you hear “experts” promoting high protein diets or other similar weight loss gimmicks you need to ask yourself if the foods they promote are acid or alkaline-forming in the body. For instance, all animal products (meat, dairy, eggs) are acid-forming in the body. Most grains and refined sugars are as well. A diet high in these foods can only result in an acidic body.
It has been said that our diet should be 80% alkaline and 20% acidic. However, I’m sure you can see that the Western diet – full of its processed, refined, and high fat foods – is the exact opposite. It’s no wonder that obesity is such a problem in Westernized countries.
So what foods are alkaline-forming?
Fruits and vegetables. The reason for this is that they are abundant in alkalizing minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium while possessing lower concentrations of acidifying properties such as sulfur and nitrogen.
The best sources of alkalinity of all foods are greens. Grasses, green vegetables, and sea vegetables are some examples. A diet rich in green foods will not only help prevent the onset of disease but it will keep you thin.
As you incorporate more green foods into your diet you will become more alkaline – displacing needless acid – and improving your fat loss efforts. Think about it…how many overweight vegans or vegetarians do you know? Obviously being vegetarian doesn’t guarantee weight loss because many of these people can also have atrocious diets. However, their chance of staying thin is far better than someone who eats burgers and other garbage foods.
How to alkalize your body?
Eat for health and you will alkalize your body and lose weight. Here are 4 strategies to help you alkalize your body for optimal fat loss (and health) results:
1. Eat more fruits and vegetables and get plenty of greens. My rule of thumb is to consume at least 1 green juice and/or salad each day.
2. Drink plenty of water. You should drink at least half your body weight (lbs) in ounces each day.
3. Breathe! Take a few minutes each day and focus on deep breathing. Oxygen is alkalizing.
4. Minimize and avoid processed foods, artificial sweeteners, and nutrition-deficient drinks like coffee and sodas.

I signed up for Weight Watchers three days before Thanksgiving.
Which proves that:
EITHER I am completely desperate to not be carrying the equivalent weight of a preschool toddler the 26.2 miles of the marathon I’m running in February
OR I have truly lost it.
I vote for both.
It’s rally time, friends. I’m really gonna need your support to unload some of this beloved blubber before I get to the starting line at the 26.2 with Donna Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer.
And lots of you are actually embarking on fitness adventures of your own! Chris is on board with me. My new friend Carla signed up last week. My pal Jackie is now considering a marathon! Woo Hoo! Who else is in? I know it’s the holidays, but think of it: what better present could you give yourself for the holidays than a healthier YOU?!
Thanks for the encouragement, everybody! The rubber meets the road tomorrow. I might really be able to do this!
Have you been procrastinating about joining a health club because of the fear-of-the-unknown factor? There’s no doubt that the process can be intimidating to first timers trying to lose unwanted fat—the lingo, the classes, the routine. Arming yourself with a little knowledge about what to expect when you walk through the door can help you find a health club where you’ll fit right in.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Facilities are just as likely to provide personal coaching, medical-school-trained personnel and day care, as they are to offer sophisticated workout machinery. Every club has a different setup, so you need to look at your needs and your routine. Is flexibility in workout times most important, or would the latest and greatest classes bolster your motivation? Do you require child care, or is proximity to work a must? Questions like these will let you come up with a short list of what you’re looking for in a health club.
TAKE A TOUR:- Pay careful attention to how well the staff listens to your questions and how concerned they seem to be with improving your physical health.
GET STARTED:- Take advantage of introductory programs, such as a fitness evaluation and equipment orientation, particularly if you haven’t exercised in a while, or at all. One-on-one time with a trainer can be key to creating a workout routine that you enjoy and will stick with. If you don’t feel like you’re clicking with your trainer, ask to be reassigned.
Health club employees can’t wave a magic wand to transform members from sedentary to taut and toned. But a good club and a caring staff can make you feel right at home and work in tandem with you to help improve your fitness level. God luck all.

In LA, a strange combo is abrew. Dieters who have struggled to lose weight los angeles have discovered that mixing two different practices can be effective . The 2 are dancing, and using laxative to lose weight. Don't continue eating if you're feeling hungry. diuretics , however , must be used with caution. they're not designed for weight reduction.
the kind of exercise is less critical. What matters most is the regularity, as any list of tips to lose weight would advise. Diet decreases caloric input. Exercise increases consumption. With these two, weight will be lost. This is correct only when a disciplined regimen is followed.
do not subscribe to trends when trying to shed pounds. One idea is that by treating the depression, you are treating the base cause of eating disorder. Other theories put forward a more direct cause and effect relationship between drug and weight. In severe cases, sickness may follow.
The best practice in L. A. or anywhere is a combination of exercise and diet. Diet means calorie control. Exercise means exerting satisfactorily to burn calories. Together, these 2 will have a much bigger effect than mediciation. you might harm your wellbeing. clients must be careful.
Wellburtin is a useful drug. Diet is also. in fact, any reasonable exercise should be part of a weight reduction program. laxatives have a particular purpose. Wellbutrin is effective when used properly. Keep exercising.
If you’re like me, you’re probably thinking about all the holiday parties coming up and how to drop a few pounds before the festivities. Thankfully, there are easy things that you can do to encourage weight loss that take very little effort. (Seriously!)
What seems like another lifetime ago, I used to work at a Sports Supplement company where I had access to some of the best trainers around. These people took being in shape to a whole different level. Not only did this mean that they knew about effective work out routines and dieting techniques, but it also meant that they knew about little “tricks” to get the body to release extra weight.
Of course, we all know that there are those quick weight loss tricks that are unsafe, but there’s ALSO weight loss tricks that are safe, healthy and effective. In fact, one of them is so easy that you won’t even have to leave your home or buy anything extra to start doing it NOW and seeing the results.
All you have to do is…DRINK MORE WATER.
Here are some interesting facts about water consumption from Diagnose Me dot com:
75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (This likely applies to half the world population)
Even MILD dehydration will slow down ones metabolism as much as 3%.
One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day (half of that coming from food and drinks other than plain water) could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
Pretty amazing, huh? Obviously water is vital to our overall health, but how many times have you went almost an entire day without so much as a sip of water and then drink excessively after feeling a strong sense of thirst? If so, you need to revise your approach to water consumption.
When you first start drinking the water that your body needs, you might experience increased urination as your body is used to utilizing whatever little moisture it receives to flush out toxins. However, keep drinking the 8 to 10 glasses of water you should be each day and before long you will notice a striking change in the way you look and feel. You might notice your skin looking brighter and clearer and your muscle tone really starting to come through.
As you continue to drink the appropriate amount of water, your body will start to trust that more is coming so it will get rid of any water retention weight in your body. This will encourage weight to drop from problem areas such as the hips, ankles, stomach and thighs.
And don’t think for even a second that you can drink more soda or other sugary beverages and get the same effect. These things come with extra calories, chemicals and even caffeine that your body doesn’t need. Also, stop drinking larger quantities of water about 3 hours before bed as not to put pressure on the inner organs.
I can’t wait to hear about your results! Please post below!
I want to introduce you to a wonderful friend of mine, Jess LaRue. You may have seen her inspiring transformation on published author and trainer Jeff Kuh’s site… Wet Wolf Training. (She is halfway down the page on his before and after pics.) Jess is a true warrior. Through the last year or so, she has struggled through some extremely painful situations in life… situations that we all hope to never go through. Yet, Jess never gave up! She relies on her faith in God as well as staying committed and true to self.
Throughout Jess’ young adult life, she stayed fit and healthy. She exercised and didn’t worry too much about her weight even after having her children. She even went to school to be a personal trainer. Then that dreadful age hit where the metabolism starts slowing —> 35! Jess began to put on weight even though she worked a job where running most days for 8 hours filling orders was the protocol. From around 1997 through 2005, Jess’ weight rose to 205 pounds on a 5 foot 9 inch frame from her normal 150 lbs. She felt guilty and continually apologized to her family. The stress over her weight was unbearable, and she would come home from work and cry most days.
Jess began exercising a lot more than she use to. Several days a week, she would head to the gym and worked out for 3 hours a day… yet no results! She was desperate and began researching for help. She started at www.bodybuilding.com and found a support group for women and mothers (this is where I met Jess). She ordered some training and nutrition books to help her get started on the right path. As Jess quoted, “Things were starting to come together and God was answering prayers.” She lost 25 pounds!
So, Jess was ecstatic that she was losing weight, BUT one day it just stopped. She was stuck at 180 pounds and could not lose anymore. She visited her doctor who told her to lower her calories. Hey! She was already on a low calorie diet taking in approximately 900-1,000 calories per day! How much more could she cut? I remember talking with Jess about this as I was afraid she was not losing weight because her body was holding onto everything it could being in starvation mode. She was having headaches and dizzy spells. All her friends on the support group were concerned for her. Then one day, she seemed to have just disappeared.
A few months later, Jess and I reunited. She showed me her transformation pictures. In just four (4) short months, she lost nearly 40 pounds!! When I saw the pictures, I was flabbergasted! I remember her being stuck for that last year I knew her at 180 pounds not making any progress… and now she was taking 10 pounds off per month! That was just AMAZING to me! So, I asked her how she did it. She was following Jeff Kuh (Wet Wolf) on www.figureathlete.com. Wet Wolf had put a challenge out and given free training and nutrition information to its readers/subscribers. Jess took on the challenge, and there was no return! She made an awesome transformation with only working out for 1.5 hours for a few days per week in the gym. Her transformation was so inspiring that Wet Wolf now has her displayed on his website. Great going, Jess!
So, what helped Jess to get out of the “stuck” mode and into the “fat burning” zone? First, she admitted to herself that she needed to do something about her body to live a healthier and more fit life. Second, she did research to find help. Also, her husband cut out buying junk food and took on a healthier diet himself, so that meant NO JUNK FOOD… only healthy foods. That relieved any temptations in the house. She even stopped eating fast foods. Finally, she put the metal to the pedal and just DID IT!
Currently, Jess has a goal to compete in figure bodybuilding in June 2010. She is packing on some muscle after losing all the body fat she needed. She even has a goal to be stronger and bench 225 pounds by March!! Woohoo!!! And, may I say that Jess is 47! You go, my friend!!!!!!!!

So I am obsessed with the scale I get on it every time I go in the bathroom thinking maybe I have lost a significant amount of weight since the last time. I know, wishful thinking. It is recommended that you only check your weight about once a week to see the difference. So I will check and document my weight loss next week.
The diet has been going okay so far. I have been watching what I eat and trying to do some Oxycise reps when I can squeeze them in. It has been a little tough because I have given into the temptation of the dreaded Halloween candy. Urgh!!!
Studies have shown that people eat approx 115 calories more on the weekend than during the week. In addition, if you eat only 50 to 100 extra calories a day, you will gain 5 to 10 pounds a year. So you can see why taking control of your weekends can be the key to healthy living.
What things will help with weekend binging?
1. Start to identify your weak points here and take action. If you tend to ‘gorge’ during social events, plan ahead so that doesn’t happen. Not every evening out should be an opportunity to go off track.
2. Notice alcohol calories and keep it in check. One way to do this is to have one drink and then alternate with calorie free beverages. Add a lime for festivity and enjoy without over indulging.
3. Lastly, the weekends are really the time to have fun by increasing your activity. Play ball!! Go on a hike. Play with kids. Don’t make television your only weekend activity.
I am sure with a little attention, you can start to identify your “weekend Achilles heel.” Send me your weekend ideas; I am sure you have some great ones!
To your health,
Dr. Sennholz

Today marks the 18th day of my hCG diet. Last week I went up and down in terms of my weight because of starting my menstrual cycle and going out to dinner for my birthday. Otherwise, I’m doing great!
I’ve finally broken through my addiction to sugar and high fat foods. It feels great putting healthy, nutritious foods into my body.
As I make dinners, I’m creating new recipes that will hopefully allow people to really enjoy their meals even through the diet restrictions.
I tested for large ketone level this morning. That’s always encouraging to see. I’ll post measurements next week as I lose more weight.
I know it’s been absolutely forever since I’ve posted on here. I know I keep saying I’ll keep up with it better. I try, but then ….. same old song and dance I guess.
Truth of the matter is, I’m stuck here. Sitting here at this plateau. Waiting for a break through. Getting discouraged. Trying not to. Trying to hang on. Holding by a thread.
I broke my foot a few weeks ago. It was a real blow to this whole thing. I’ve been working out still, doing upper body with my weights and getting cardio in with the rowing machine and stationary bike. Eating has been … eh… ok. I’ve done ok for the most part. I’ve had a few cheat days, more than I’d like to count. … but overall, just ok.
I know I could break through if I would just do what I did in the beginning. I know it would happen. I have got to find a way to get my motivation back. I need the drive that I had when I first started. Gotta find it somehow.
I’m just tired of these injuries setting me back. I hurt my shoulder probably about 2-3 months ago and it’s not much better. I’ve had steroid injections and everything, but it’s just still hurting. Probably a result of over training and trying to do too much before I’m ready. On the one hand, I need to be more aware of my limitations, but on the other hand, I need something to push me harder. It’s just such a hard place to be in.
Plus, lately when I look in the mirror, I still see the old 300 pound me looking back at me. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but she’s plaguing me more lately. It’s like she’s hanging around, just waiting to be back in my life….to be me again. I feel haunted by her somehow. There’s this nagging voice in my head telling me that she’ll be back…..that I was just born to be fat. I hate her. I hate everything I was when I was her. I was so weak…so depressed….so out of control of my own actions. But there she is, every morning, looking at me.
Sure, it would be easy to just give in…give up, eat what I want, not go to the gym, not have this stupid pain from over doing it. But what would that mean? It would mean me giving up on myself. It would mean not giving myself a chance to be the best person I can be. It would mean ultimately a shorter life most likely….medications for blood pressure possibly…type two diabetes possibly….everything I don’t want. Easy is never better. Taking the easy way out is just exactly that….taking an out. It’s something I can never do. So somehow I have to break through this….make my way out….find some motivation….do something….
